Speaking in a Dwarven Manner

Most roleplay takes place in /say and /emote, and is generally written in English. The majority of roleplayers are friendly and not at all overly concerned about spelling mistakes, grammar, or punctuation, just as long as you are giving it a try.

Do not bother worrying about correcting mistakes in /say; however, if you feel you must, correct yourself in /kin, /tell, or /fellowship instead.

What are Khuzdul and Neo Khuzdul?

Khuzdul was the language of the dwarrow, or dwarves, as invented by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. We do not have a complete dictionary of Khuzdul, as, it was said that dwarves kept the language secret, save for a few place names and phrases, such as their battle-cry and tomb inscriptions.

We know for example; Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu! which translates to Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!

David Salo took this further, with Neo Khuzdul, expanding the dwarven language further so that it could be used further.

The Dwarrow Scholar has then taken this to the next level, producing a dictionary and many explanations and teaching resources to help make the language of the dwarves come to life. The Dwarrow Scholar Library in particular is a goldmine of advice.

Examples of Roleplay Conversation

When roleplaying as a dwarf, it's important to remember several things:

1. Not everyone can read or write (Neo-)Khuzdul, and
2. As a “secret" language, it might be better to write in English, however,
3. A little (Neo-)Khuzdul can spice up (add flavour to) interactions.

Scenario: Thief Approaching Trade Caravan

In this example, a thief targeting trade caravans attempts to avoid the Blue Mountains Regiment on patrol.

Scenario: Dwarves at the Market

In this scenario, a dwarf is buying beer at the market from another before being interrupted and switching to English.
